چکیده

Thurston’s hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem is one of the most important results in 3-manifold theory, and it has stimulated an enormous amount of research. IfM is a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary a single torus, then the theorem asserts that, for all but finitely many slopes s on ∂M , the manifold M(s) obtained by Dehn filling along s also admits a hyperbolic structure. The slopes s where M(s) is not hyperbolic are known as exceptional. A major open question has been: what is the maximal number of exceptional slopes on such a manifold M? When M is the exterior of the figure-eight knot, the number of exceptional slopes is 10, and this was conjectured by Gordon in [17] to be an upper bound that holds for all M . In this paper, we prove this conjecture.

The Classification of Toroidal Dehn Surgeries on Montesinos Knots

Exceptional Dehn surgeries have been classified for 2-bridge knots and Montesinos knots of length at least 4. In this paper we classify all toroidal Dehn surgeries on Montesinos knots of length 3.

Cusp Volumes of Alternating Knots

We show that the cusp volume of a hyperbolic alternating knot can be bounded above and below in terms of the twist number of an alternating diagram of the knot. This leads to diagrammatic estimates on lengths of slopes, and has some applications to Dehn surgery. Another consequence is that there is a universal lower bound on the cusp density of hyperbolic alternating knots.

The Classification of Exceptional Dehn Surgeries on 2-bridge Knots

A nontrivial Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic knot K in S is exceptional if the resulting manifold is either reducible, or toroidal, or a Seifert fibered manifold whose orbifold is a sphere with at most three exceptional fibers, called a small Seifert fibered space. Thus an exceptional Dehn surgery is non-hyperbolic, and using a version of Thurston’s orbifold theorem proved by Boileau and Porti [BP...

Exceptional Surgery Curves in Triangulated 3-manifolds

For the purposes of this paper, Dehn surgery along a curve K in a 3-manifold M with slope σ is ‘exceptional’ if the resulting 3-manifold MK(σ) is reducible or a solid torus, or the core of the surgery solid torus has finite order in π1(MK(σ)). We show that, providing the exterior of K is irreducible and atoroidal, and the distance between σ and the meridian slope is more than one, and a homolog...

Attaching handlebodies to 3–manifolds

The main theorem of this paper is a generalisation of well known results about Dehn surgery to the case of attaching handlebodies to a simple 3–manifold. The existence of a finite set of ‘exceptional’ curves on the boundary of the 3–manifold is established. Provided none of these curves is attached to the boundary of a disc in a handlebody, the resulting manifold is shown to be word hyperbolic ...
